Well first major difficulty was putting in a sound system in a regular cab. I got myself a bunch of room by relocating all the tire jack and tools to a tool box in the bed.

Next problem was finding a subwoofer that would work in a shallow box. Without losing more than 2 inches of travel on either seat in my bench seats, I had to find a subwoofer with less than 6.5" of top mounting depth (if using 3/4" MDF for the box). That is actually not too hard to do, until I decided to power the sub with an MTX 801D which by specs alone, it delivers 800 watts @ 2 ohms. The birth sheet actually shows just over 950 watts @ 2 ohms.

Now to find a sub that can take that power, sound decent, and fit in my future box.

Enter the audiobahn DUB 1200. Audiobahn actually had about 4 or 5 models to choose from that would fit. I went with the DUB 1200 because it came with the grill. The grill is almost mandatory in a regular cab, so you can push the seats back as far as they can go, and the grill will make sure the sub has plenty of room to move. You lose some sound projection from the cone by doing it this way, but it's about the best you can do without having the sub centered and making both seats have to be forward about 2 clicks to fit.

Now the mounting of the amplifiers. The easiest I could see was to mount the amplifiers onto the box, which is to take up the whole area behind the seats. Some may think that this isn't good for the amps, and while they are in principle right, you really can't damage the amps unless you are producing huge amounts of bass. I'm talking competition levels would be required to mess with any circuitry. But even with moderate amounts of bass, you can expect to see some ***** vibrating around and in and out of adjustment. Haven't experienced that yet. Plus since I have 2 nice and new/shiny amps, why hide them or try to stuff one under the seat were they can get exposed to water, dirt, and scratches?

So enough blabbing, here's what I came up with. Most have seen it on other sites, but I thought I'd chrisen this board with my photos too. :)

There isn't one thing stock left in my stereo system.

Wiring: All RCA's by Monster cable. Power and speaker cables from Tweeter, and power distribution box by JL Audio.

Head unit: Alpine CDA-9813. - It fits in with the Stock Ford green instruments, and sounds awesome.


Subwoofer: Alpine DUB 1200 12" - 700W RMS


Speakers: Polk EX368 - 6x8". SCREAMING high's, but not so good lows. Doesn't like anything below 200 Hz at all, at least @ 75W. These speakers are rated for 65W RMS.


Sub Amp: MTX 801D - 800W @ 2 Ohm, but spec sheet shows it delivers over 950W @ 2 OHMS/14.4Volts. Shiny chrome, and a bulletrpoof amp.


4 channel Amp: Jensen LXA600 - 75Wx4 RMS. Not a big name, but I got a great deal on it.


Subwoofer box: 3/4" MDF self made. Covered with truck bed coating (rubber coat). Sealed with polyurethane glue and about 150 dry wall screws. Filled with Polyfil.




Those pictures are a couple months old. I have since covered all wire with wire loom, and installed an external bass controller. Still haven't decided where it's best to mount that yet.

Only problems is that it rattles all my plastic trim in the rear. It also jiggles my mirrors a bit, and occasionally moves my driver's side out of alignment. It's plenty loud enough for me, and can probably hit the meter in the mid 130's, but that's just a guess.

So what do ya think? Any dallas members who have heard my old system, well this one just puts that one to shame.

What's the volume of that box?

 

About 1 cubic foot, internal air space, after taking out sub volume.
