when i wax, what is the point of doing one section at a time? is it okay to lay a layer of wax down across the whole truck, and then buff the excess off? i know it dries, and makes it harder to remove. im using an orbital buffer, so its not THAT hard when it dries. is there anything wrong with it? this goes for the cleaner, the polish, and the wax. and im using the meguires deep cleaner, and the professional line polish and yellow professional wax. not sure of the numbers.

the more it dries the better it coats or somethin like that..

i just do a body part at a time..then start on another once the other is coated remove the 1st body part..then move on..

lol i just put the wax al lthe way around the truck an then once im done i might go get a pop, watch some tv, poilsh the wheels, or something then i go back and wipe it all off.

but i just apply it by hand buffers are bad, bad, bad.

 

why??? its an orbital buffer, it cant hurt the paint....unless i hold it in the same place, press down as hard as i can, and then pray....LOL

so what you guys are saying, is that when it "coats" its bad??? i coats once it dries? so drying all the way, its bad?

i would just put it on by hand alot less likly to scratch. i would also use NXT liquid polish. i let it dry it might be on my truck for 30min to an hour and a half.

that is how i like to wax and maybe once or twice a year i will clay bar my truck.

 

what is more important, working the application? or working the removal? im new to this stuff, and i want to do it right. i have 100's of branch scratches going down the side of the truck, some quite deep. this is from wheeling in the woods like an idiot. i tried buffing them out of my bed on saturday, but they are not all gone yet. need some input

 

you might have to use a clay bar to get those scratched out, im gonna read up on how to get them out and take some small scratches out on mine...I like spray on wax myself....

as long as you are using a soft terry cloth on the orbital, you can hold it down and push it as hard as you want, with wax, hardly any scratches. I do it with medium grade compound to get heavy swirls out, with a 19Lbs orbital.
I would orbital the wax on, but take off by hand, or, use you wax rag and your orbital, just lay the rag flast and set the orbital on top, real quick way to get the heavy stuff off. Let the wax dry, do the whole truck all at once, and if you want, throw another coat of it on. Doesn't matter if it's the "cleaner" or "Polish" or the sealer wax.
Application and removal are just as important as the other. Just keep your wax rag clean, fold it a few times, and keep turning it.

edit - use some compound and the orbital for the scratches, and any swirls.
claybar won't take out scratches, if it's a scruff, then yeah it may take it off, but it doesn't remove scratches, it removes brake dust, fallout, water spots, and any imperfections in the paint that can be picked at with a finger nail. Just cause you can feel a scratch doesn't mean you can't buff it out.

 

that helps a lot....im actually excited to wax it next....lol...i need to get a claybar for sure, ive been meaning to do that for a while....do i claybar before or after the cleaner?

 

clay bars dont remove scratches, they remove surface dirt and other contaminants...

 

wash it
clay bar it
wax it
wipe it off.

there really isnt any kind of trick to it.

its a bar of clay. and a speed detailer as the lubricant. it removes all the containiments from the paint.

makes the paint baby butt smooth.

 

You guys seem very NOOBish to detailing..I'm sooo not putting you guys down..I have alot of respect for you all...I'm NOOBish to the Ranger world sooo we are even..Alot of the things you all are saying about detailing is waaayyyy off..A buffer is better for the paint unless you have a rotary and DO NOT know what you are doing..Hand buffing is WORSE than a orbital buffer..

Clay baring DOES NOT remove scratches..It removes imbedded dirt and grime..Thats it...You need to POLISH out scratches and PROTECT polish with a good wax or other synthetic protectant..

Polishing by hand will get LIGHT surface scratches out but does not make much of a difference..Honestly you are MORE likely to scratch your paint...I wish I could show you guys up close what a good compound and rotary buffer can do for your paint..Your jaws would drop..

 

just use the car soap as the lube. That works the best and keeps the clay bar clean. Remeber to keep kneeding the clay to keep a side clean, and dunk it in the soap bucket every now and then. the clay bar will put surface scratches in the paint, thats what the polish wax is for. then you need a sealant type of wax after that to help make it last longer

better yet, come up to ohio, and i can have it washed, clayed, buffed, and waxed in less then 3 hours, for 40 bucks.

same here, it's what i do for a living 10 hours and day, and training people is always fun when it's buffing time.

 

it just different opinions then. my paint is in pretty good shape. not many scratches or swirl marks from buffing or anything and i do it ALL by HAND.

idk if the term buffing is different than waxing or what but im waxing. i never had to buff any car. it can all be waxed or restored with clay bar and some Liquid NXT wax.

 

what is the diffrence between polish and wax?? how do u apply it, i do the same as Zach but i havent clay bared it yet i going ot do that when its warm out. i have a lot of lil scratched and from thoes jelous kids in the parking lots that like to key cars. how would i get it off and i do have a like 8" buffer but i never used it before idk what it is always thought had was better.

polish takes out screches. waxing puts a protectant on the paint and fills some of the small voids in the paint to give it a glossy wet look...

 

thank you i need to try polishing next time, maby when its warmer my hands were freezing waxing today lol
