Are you using a liquid lubricant, so the clay bar easily slides over the surface? It should slide easily, without feeling tacky. When the one side is dirty, work it in you hand to "mix" it together to get clean side.

When it comes to overspary, the clay bar is only good on certain finishes. For general removal and cleaning for this situation, I use 3M Cleaner Wax, it gets rid of most anything.

http://www.amazon.com/3M-Cleaner-Med.../dp/B0009H50WC

this is a good restoring wax as it protects and cleans, but once you get the surface smooth again, I recomend finishing up with a good gritless wax or polish. If you like 3M stuff, follow it up with the finishing glaze from 3M.

i personally dont like the mother's clay bar, its kind of soft, I like the one from 3M, Griot's Garage, even the zaino's clay bar is decent.

Also make sure you make a nice FLAT pancake when you use it. The surface area and lube are critical.

I am kind of a detail nerd, my one buddy owns a paint shop, the other is a 3M automotive rep. That and I impulse buy every detail product when it comes out thinking there will be a miracle wax one day.

i got tree sap on the roof of my truck and the hood of my truck when i went camping once, have never been able to get rid of, used claybars, waxes, cleaners, alcohol, and i dont think any of it came off, and now the clear coat is peeling in the exact spots that the sap was, every time i wash/wax it you can see white spots from where the sap is
it wont go away
excuse for the custom paint job i want though

Well...I've used WD40 in the past to remove road tar. Worked great...just remember to re-wax the area. good luck.

On my GF's car we removed alot of tree sap and road tar using Goo Gone, and we found 5 or 6 different sap removers at wally world, the one we tried by turtle wax did pretty good with a little elbow grease

I can easily remove road tar with a claybar. Like everyone said before, the lub is critical, don't be afraid to use it. Make sure to keep "kneading" the clay around to keep the surface of it clean. I always clay bar my entire vehicle after I wash and before I wax. It makes for a very smooth surface to wax on and really makes a difference.
