Water Pump - do the bolts need to be sealed? 2001 2.3 duratec
I was working on my IMRC valve and vacuum hoses when I noticed antifreeze dripping from the water pump. $100 and 3-4 hours later, it's still leaking (new pump, serpentine belt, upper and lower hoses, antifreeze, etc).
The pump was a major pain to remove. I pulled the fan, shroud, etc off and had the pump unbolted pretty quick. Then beat on the pump with a hammer and block of wood and pried like crazy. It wasn't moving. I gave up with the block of wood and after beating the pump into a ugly mass of dented metal, it finally came out. It was easy to re-install everything. I didn't forget the o-ring, and put a dab of rtv on it to hold it in place.
It's still leaking. The only thing I can think of is that it is leaking through the bolts. Do the bolts enter a water jacket? Do they need to be sealed with teflon or RTV? Or could it be leaking from somewhere just behind the pump?
I've already replaced the thermostat and all associated hoses. The leak isn't coming from there.

what year and engine do you have? if you have the 2.0 or 2.3 you have to seal the bolts. and you should have put sealer on both sides of the gasket before installing on any of the engines.

Thanks for the link cruiser5001,
Since I have a 2001 Ranger, the pump is quite different. It's the first time I've changed a pump where the housing was actually integrated into the block. The pump consists of basically a shaft, pulley mount, and impeller.
Like this:
NOT like this:
Due to the design of the pump, there is no gasket, just an o-ring. I did use RTV on the back side of the o-ring to hold it in place and to fill in any scratches that may have been created in the removal process.
I should have taken pictures as I went along, but I never want to use my camera or phone when my hands are filthy.
This photo should help show how it seals, with the o-ring.

Doing this train wreck now...
My truck: 2002 Ranger XCab, 2.3L DOHC (Duratec) 2wd / 5-speed M5OD tranny, 105k miles.
Just started this train wreck this morning. Ran into the seized-pump problem also. Here's the pictures I've taken so far. Need suggestions on how to get the pump out.
I read the remarks about the hammer & wood trick, but it concerns me that the housing might have gotten warped a little from the beating. As expected, none of the shops around here (Killeen, TX) will tell me anything on the phone except "bring it in and we'll look at it" $$$$ is where that goes.
Here's the pictures I've taken so far in my attempt.

The beating on the pump didn't help for me. What helped the most was taking a flat blade screw driver in between the one side and slightly pry the edge out at which point I grabbed the pump by both hands and started wiggling it back and forth for almost 3-5 minutes before I could get it out. Beating it didn't move it at all so I did this and it worked well... Just be careful NOT to nick the metal or bend anything that shouldn't be bend.. IE: Put the screw driver or really anything flat in there and just slight pull it so you can get a wiggle room out of it in a way...
Pics aren't loading btw.

This is where the fun begins. Three 8mm bolts. But they don't hold the pump in as much as the 100k miles worth of heat-cycling seizes the pump in place. Its not a pump that sits on the surface of the housing the way the old pumps on Windsor engines did. This one is a male-pump-into-female-housing fit. Seats in about 1/2"

This is as far as I gotten. Truck is still in pieces in the driveway. I took a chisel and tried to drive it down between the pump and the housing, but couldn't get a solid enough swing to do any good. Time for round 2.
Wish me luck. More pictures to follow as I get this poorject completed (no that's not a misspelling, I'm broke, wallet is flatter than an anorexic chick's *****).

I cleaned up the area and RTV'ed my bolts and put the new pump in, remounted the PS pump and reservoir, but the air tube back on, filled up with water to see if it'd leak, got it sitting out in the driveway till the RTV cures.
If you can get to this point, reassembly is reverse order.
Next up is the vacuum leak. I freaking hate vacuum leaks.
