Fuel Filter..

Any pics or good how to's relevant to Rangers?

I know the front of the truck should be elevated higher than the rear and that I mess with the thing in the passenger kick panel, start the truck, it dies, no pressure, then ok to work on.. and thats about it..

what else is there?

That one doesnt even look like the one you got Yours is short and fat. The one you got it long

If the new one comes with caps over the ends. take that and imediatly place over the old one when you get the hose off. some fuel will still come out.

You dont need that special tool either

Just use your finger and press really hard andit will come lose

Once you do it youll laugh at people who pay to have this done

If they are hard then spray some WD40 in the fittings.

Thats it, then you can replace the filter.
Those style fuel lines you don't need a fuel filter tool either (you can if you want), just push the plastic in like a button and pull apart (like that visible red on the pic).

I thought that too, but pepboys says that is what the Ranger uses and I didnt want to drive alllllllll the way to the ford dealer to spend more, though I like motorcraft, just not the prices..

sounds simple enough, I'll do it tomorrow after work..

How would I know how bad the old one was? just to make it more worth it..
The truck has 64k and I have done most of the work 30k on..

It's either '00 or '01 and up do not require a special tool as the fitting are quick connections.

Pull your fuel pump fuse. Start truck up and let it start to die, then shut truck off. That relieves pressure.

The front hose: There's a white "pin clip" thing that needs to come out. I used a small flat screw driver. Then pull the hose off the filter.

The two rear hoses: They have push ins that are colored. Ones orange the other is green. Push towards the center of the hose on those colored clips, and simply push on them and pull the hose off the filter.

Of course...somewhere in the middle there's the unbolting of the filter...I do that first, then the front hose.

Install is easy. Simply push on the rear hoses and listen for a "click". Push on the front hose and put in the clip. There might be a click but i don't remember. Then bolt it up.

Start up: Let the fuel pump cycle a few times. By turning the key to run(just before you hit the starter). Turn it off. Turn it on a few time to pump fuel up into the injectors.

I just did my own not much less then a month and a half ago, Shane has it dead on.. relieve pressure by pulling teh fuse and starting up the truck for about 15-20 seconds or so. Then crawl under and start working around it with a flathead screwdriver, might be stubborn, but it does only take a few minutes to do.

Another "test" for the fuel filter, if you feel any resistance when you blow through it (don't taste it), it's good to change it. I had one on my old truck that was so clogged that I couldn't even get any air to come out the other side, I was lucky it didn't burn the fuel pump up.

What is usually the standard mileage that a fuel filter lasts? aka how long before you should change it?

Do fuel filters and fuel pumps have any impact on gas milage Given that fuel can still get to the motor? If so, how?

remove the front line first it will allow fuel to drain outta filter more slowly preventing any built up pressure you might have forgot to release from spewing in your eye and sending you to er for 4 hrs. Otherwise, release the pressure at the fuel rail. keep both lines elevated to prevent excess fuel flow once they are off the filter

Yes. Filters that is.....Allows proper fuel flow to your fuel rails. Thus making an engine run better = more economical.

YES,YES, fuel pumps have just as big of an effect on mileage as filters. If your pump dont work your notgonna get any miles per gallon at all. JUST FYI

I do mine every 15k, but 30k is the maintenance interval I believe.

Seems to idel better and more "power" at higher rpms..

next: oil, oil filter, and clean the k&n or I might put the stock box back in with the k&n tube so I have a cold air intake again..

You won't notice if you have a slightly plugged filter where the pump can keep up with fuel demand. (pump will be overworked to do so) Fuel quality will be poor which may affect it a bit.
We have fuel regulators at our fuel rails.
But if it gets extreme, then you can run lean and this will cause poor emissions, poor driveablity, and a CEL. Only then you will notice your mileage (may be your least concern at that time) lol.
