pull a little harder on the rubber cap, on mine i had yank the **** outta of it to have it come off. I guess the manual is wrong cause i went to napa and they said it took 4 also, plus its a 4 banger.

the rangers with the SOHC motors(I believe the 90-00 year models) have dual plugs on them so you will need 8 spark plugs. but in 2001 Ford went to a DOHC motor and those have single plugs so you should only need 4 spark plugs. yours looks like the DOHC motor so you should only need 4.

Removal tool probably is a good idea. I found that the wires were easier (not easy) to remove when the engine was warm. Start it up, run for a few miles, put on some protection from the heat, and try to pull straight up/twist from the caps. Good luck, it ain't easy. The hardest one for me was #4 all the way in the back - good thing I was going to replace the wires anyway, because I had to pull that one by whatever I could get my hand on - including the wire itself!

I made a loop out of a coat hanger.. and it popped right off.. I should have posted pics, but the coil/wires are the cleanest part of my engine bay..
