Rough Starting Sometimes

Just got my new to me 2005 4 cylinder ranger a week ago and loving it so far. However there is one thing slightly concerning me. Sometimes when I go to start the truck it will turn over, fire and then putter and die if I don't give it some gas, and even then sometimes it dies. It does this in the morning and during the day. It even did it once when I had started the truck, ran for about 30 seconds, and then shut it down and went to restart (forgot something in the garage). My 1996 f-150 4.9L does the same thing occasionally but it an older beater truck that I am not as worried about, this however I plan to drive for many years to come. Any ideas on what could be the issue.

On a side note, after filling up for the second time i calculated my mileage to be 22 mpg. This is a std cab, 5 speed, 4 cylinder, short bed truck. A friend of mine has a 2003 that gets 27-28 or so he claims. Im really going to be watching my foot on this tank and see what I get but any suggestions or things to look for? Truck has 37300 miles.
