So I have a 1986 2.9l extended cab and I have been unable to engage 4wheel drive by pushing the buttons located on ceiling behind mirror so I assumed it didn't work. I went off road down hill and started hearing weird noises from the front end like something was grinding so I pulled over and stopped. After messing around with the buttons it seemed like 4x4 was engaged and couldn't get it out. Drove home and after turning on and off the truck along with many other things it disengaged somehow but now it has a nasty rubbing noise coming from the front right tire. Any ideas on what the heck it is?.. Keep in mind I do not know the steps to engage the 4x4 or disengage it and this is the first time since owning ive gotten it to work.

 

try putting it in reverse and driving back wards for a few yards it worked for my friends 96 when his used to make a whinning noise after using 4wheel drive
