im in the works to be lifting the danger ranger next spring and am probably going to be doing a gear swap first.what difference in installation is there with putting in 4.56 to 4.88s. ive heard of clearance issues and shimming problems but i cant remember if it was about rangers or fullsize.by the way i have 7.5,3.73s,2wd,5spd.any info appreciated,thanks ahead

 

I dont think they make 4.88's for the 7.5 I could be wrong though. If I was you I would find a 8.8" rear end you can find them pretty cheap. What size tire are you going to running also?

 

31s-35s.im into wheel well space and ill probably buy whatever i can find a deal on.the 4.88s would explain why i cant find em on ebay.4.56s it is.its all up in the air for now.i hate the 3.73s now, so anything is an improvement. 4.56? gear swap first then maybe a 3"or 5.5"spindle lift,then tires. if for some reason i dont lift it at least ill have some better gears.

What are you plans for the truck? 33's and 4.56's on a 4cyl should be about just right.

I suggest finding a junkyard 8.8" w/ 4.10s, and go from there. I don't think i've seen 4.88's for a 7.5".

 

yeah, definately get an 8.8... try and find an FX4 axle or Explorer axle (which has disc brakes).

 

Not all explorer rearends have disk brakes some have drum and if you dont feel like putting that little extra effort into your work then just go with a ranger 8.8 it can handle atleast 33's and 35's from what i hear

 

all 95+ have 8.8's, 31spline, and discs....

Ford 8.8 is compariable to the GM 12bolt....strong axle.

 

make sure you see if its open diff or limited slip pending on what your using your truck for.

 

yeah ill keep that in mind about the 8.8. is there any sensors i have to worry about that the 7.5 doesnt have?and whats some good model years for the ranger or explorer i can try to find?thanks
