From what i understand, and i might be wrong is that the Explorer motor has a more torquer cam in it and less high end. Were s the stang is more for high end hp. But it all boils down to what it is you are building your truck for. Drag racing you would want to go with the Mustang engine, wheeling go with the Exploder/Mountaineer. They are the same engines other then that. Also it has to be from a 1999-2002 because after that they went to the 4.6L and those things are wide, were as the 5.0L is more narrow. Plus they were both built on the Ranger frame so alot of the holes match right up.

8 men to that!
i drove my f-150 for over a year, with the front of the muffler held up by a piece of rope tied around the frame... every 2 weeks or so, the rear (and only hanger on that section of pipe) would fall off, and i woudl have to stop and put it back on... i was about 1/4 mile from work one day, running a little late, it fell off and i said **** it and drove in anyways... boy did i get a nasty look from the bosses! :D
on a quiet night on deerfoot, you can hear a chevy rust...

The Explorer Engines have a couple things going for them, a front accessory rack that is closer to the engine, making the engine shorter, adaptability to the Ranger Frame; they run pretty close.
I don’t think the Explorer Motor has more torque than the Stang just that the cam is designed to bring the torque in at a lower rpm ranger, a more usable range if you will.
If the year of the Ex is close to the year of the Ranger then the Electronics will be similar also BUT you need all of the engine harnessing, accessories and what ever else you can get with the engine.
Best situation would be have the donor vehicle next to the garage you are doing the swap in, that way you can get anything you need off of the vehicle as things pop up.
Sorry if this is repeated info, I am just talking and thinking at the same time and that causes problems, well sometimes and I did not read all of the post.
Luck with the swap.

INHO the wreak is the way to go.
Find a JY that has the newest vehicle with a 5.0L and make a deal to take the vehicle and take the parts you want then send the vehicle back; I am trying to do that now.
I am not sure the newest Ex/Mounty you would need but I would get the one closest to your tear vehicle.
One thing, some of the Cash for Clunker Vehicles have had there engines made unusable so the 5.0L out of these vehicles will not be good but the harnessing and all of the other stuff would be so all you would need was another 5.0L.
I have my own engine, all I need are the harnessing and the such so that is how I want to handle it.
