What. Umm if i can get my hands on a used BW1354 and rebuild it I think it is safe to say that it will be far less then 2000, lol and I am not building a race truck, Just something the is dependable, and easy maintance. Don't get me wrong I would love to get my hands on a Atlas, but they are way to expansive.

IIRC, the big difference between the two is that with the manual the linkage goes right through the back of the t-case, whereas with the autos the motor just plugs in to the front. I'm not 100% but I remember something about that.
I wouldn't worry too much about buying a used t-case. Its not too difficult to spin it by hand to listen for noises, but they weren't really bad for blowing up but occasionally they'll wear out due to high mileage (like anything else). If its clean, doesn't look tampered with, and doesn't smell burnt then I wouldn't worry too much about it. They're pretty hearty units. LR
