rear axle question

my rear tires sway while driving, like a in and outward shake, this mornin at the shop i jacked up the rear end and checked the lugs, after checkin all the tightness, i pulled on the rim/tire outwards, and the whole axle moved like an 1/8 of an inch, both sides, identical, i had a few ranger friends say its do to the c-clamp, they all have play, is this true, or is it time to replace bearings within the axle?

Yes an unbalanced tire could shake the truck if its really bad. You could have a bent axle shaft. Mine is bent a bit but it doesn't shake my truck. You can see it if you pay attention when driving behind me.
