driveshaft noise

I have a 1998 Ranger with a 3.0 5-speed 4x4. when i am going forward and stop to back up, as i start to let the clutch out, i hear a "tink" noise from the rear of the truck. when im backing up and i go forward, it till "tink" again. I replaced the u-joints and i still hear it. when you put one hand on either side of the splined slip shaft, and twist your hands in opposite directions, there is slight play. i dont know how much play is supposed to be in the shaft, or if the driveshaft is even the noise. it is not a "clunk" it is a "tink" which leads me to belive it is the driveshaft since it sounds hollow. any input?

That sound is from the backlash between the ring and pinion gears in the rear axle. It's echoing through the driveshaft. Some backlash is normal .Usually when it gets excessive the rear end will start howling.

it doesnt howl and it will make the noise almost every time you switch directions of the vehicle. i will have to check the backlash as soon as i get a chance. it doesnt do it as soon as the vehicle changes direction, it will do it once the vehicle is already in motion and the clutch is about half way out

i think the problem is that splined part of the drive shaft where it moves in and out.. it gets dry, and binds up when you stop, then when you start off the stress makes it move making that noise.. maybe..
