2004 4x4 axle question

i'm changing the pass front axle on my 2004 ranger, 4x4 4.0, got the old axle out, and i'm putting in the new one. how do i know when it's in all the way? i pushed and wiggled and felt a pop/snap, like it locked in place, but it comes back out with just a slight tug. any info appriciated. oh and i'm doing the bearing at the same time.

Visually check to see if the end of the axle shaft is touching the seal on the axle housing. If it isnt, the axle hasnt seated. The bearing assembly keeps the axle from coming out of the axle so if it pops, just leave it alone.
