Re-Gearing....DIY or Shop?

Need to re-gear my truck. 2011 Sport 4.0L auto. 3.55 gears. 2wd

Running 33s but now have brand new 35s sitting in my basement. From what i read 4.88s is the way to go with 35s. How difficult is this to do myself? Is it better to take it to a shop that specializes in this kind of thing? Any idea what approx. prices are?

Thanks

Blacklash, angles and alot of measurements. The littlest mistake can ruin a whole rearend.

You're definitely better to take it elsewhere and have it done professionally.

One place near you to try would be Misener Motorsports in Brantford... he dyno'd & tuned my Mustang and works in all that kind of stuff. If he can't do it I'm sure he can point you in the direction of someone nearby who can!

Unless you have done it before I would bring it elsewhere. Easier that way.

Let the Pro’s do it, if it whines or clunks you can bring it back.
Chk with your buds for a local guy to do it.

If it was a 9” Ford I would say to attempt it, I have done those and the y worked out OK but with the 8,8s the pinion is part of the housing and if not setup properly the first time you ill need to get another crush sleeve and nut to start again.

Also, although you can pull the diff and reinstall it without a case spreader it is easier to use one.

luck if you do it yourself,

Ok so I got a couple qoutes locally.

Misener Motorsports in Brantford said approx $550 out the door. Doesnt matter what gear ratio.

Now Marken Performance in Kitchener said Almost $1000 as a notched cross pin shaft is needed. Does this seem right to you guys

I was quoted on a 4x, $1000 for gears and master rebuild kits, both front and rear, installed, then $799 for an OX Locker in the Rear, no additional labor.
The mechanic told me later the price has to go up $200 because of the front suspension.

To me for the job to go from $550 to $1000 is not called for, mod’g the cross pin shouldn't take that much extra time.

I paid about 1100 for gears, master install kit, notched crosspin, new carrier, and labor.

this is defintly a situation where id pay to have it done. gears not properly set up wont last. if you dont have the tools needed, then you have to buy those & you may never need them again. if you already have the tool and youve done re-gearing before, than sure, go ahead. but it is quite a bit more involved than say putting on new brake pads.

im in the same boat for getting new gears. I have 2wd open and if i bought the parts it would be 389.19+ fluid and tax for the shop to do it. with this in mind it would cost me about 400 for parts and specialty tools from what i gather. so i think i will spend the extra 200 and have shop do it and get the 1 year warranty.

Of course my reason isnt due to big tires. I just want to be able to pull my boat out of the water without smoking my clutch. So with just a stock 3.0 im hoping 4.56 would be good. i dont do much highway driving or anything with it.

I have 3.73. I thought of HD clutch but afraid I would stall instead of slip. Sorry for the hijack.

If you're still on stock tires I would maybe just do a 4.10 that's what I have and I tow a boat with it. Of course, now I want ls and rear discs.... Pulling a boat makes you worry like that.

Ok. I was priced out $2800!!!!!!!!!!! For one diff!!!!!!!! Their breakdown is as follows:

Gears - $575
Master Install Kit - $225
Notched Cross Pin Shaft - $90
75W140 Fluid - $90
Flash Pack - $500

Thats $1500 for parts. The otherr $1300 is labour and tax.

Ive looked into the parts and I see they are way overcharging me. Now my big question::

They are telling me as its a 2011 that the tranny works off wheel speed sensors. So if i dont spend $500 plus $100 labour for the flash pack to tell my trucks computer that its running bigger tires and gears that my tranny will not work or shift properly. Is this true????

Thanks alot guys.
