4spd auto to 5spd auto?

Hey guy's I am wondering if i can take the 5spd Automatic out of the 97 Ranger and drop it in my 96 to replace my 4spd, I am pretty sure my tranny is starting to slip, it will sometimes between 2nd to 3rd. Common sense to me would to swap the Computer along with it, since these are fully computer controlled, or would i be better off spending 600 and have it rebuilt when it fails?

I would go with go with the 5-speed auto. You'll get better gas mileage. You wouldn't happen to have a 3.0 would you?

I have a 2004 5R44E ... would it bolt up to a 4.0 OHV? (I'm guessing the answer is no.)

SOHC to OHV will bolt up but you will be short one bolt and the dowl pin may need to be removed.

BTW, electronics changed in 04. Not sure what effects that has on the trans.

4 spd and 5 spd auto are the same transmission, it just applies OD to 1st to get a new second gear. Not sure about the better mileage, but gives better acceleration to 55 @ wot.

With the upgrade in 98 you will need the computer from the 00 as well. The fuel system changed in 98. Im not sure what changed in the harness if anything. Also in 99-00 there are trucks with out EGR. (like mine) Im not sure how this will effect your swap.

IMHO, swapping to the 5spd isn't worth the hassle, just get your rebuilt.
