4wd To 2wd

Since I don't do any off roading, I was wondering if it was possible to convert my 4WD to 2WD? Is it possible to remove the front drive shaft and half shafts?
The vehicle is an 01 Ranger 4.0L automatic.
Thanks

um why?

your in 2wd when driving on the street, so why get rid of the 4wd? not hurting anything by being there.

alright seriously, you cant just remove the half shafts. you would have to get 2wd spindles, and remove the front diff and the driveshaft. its possible, it would just be ghetto.

ok since this has become a flame post I will throw in my analogy.

Asking how to convert a 4wd to a 2wd is like asking how to remove a ball. I have two, but I only need one. So what do I do to remove it.

HEHE. I am sorry i couldn't resist.

With the high price of gas I just thought it would improve mileage because I wouldn't have all that drag. (half-shafts, diff, transfer case)

they shouldn't be turning, while in 2wd...

and if you're just talking weight, it wont make that much of a difference, in gas mileage...

just let me swap our truck's bodies...

The gas mileage may only go up a few mpg, but not much. the less weight won't give too much more fuel efficiency. The aero dynamics, gearing, tire size, and Hp of you truck will affect it alot more.

Actually, there is no hub disconnect at all on 4WD Rangers from 2000 1/2 on. That means that whenever they are rotating in 2WD, the front tires are pushing a lot of stuff - half shafts, differential, front driveshaft, transfer case front output shaft and its chain drive. On a late model Ranger, the only real difference between 2HI and 4HI is that the T/C front output shaft is not mechanically locked to the T/C main I/O shaft assembly when the T/C is in 2HI.

MORE THAN DOUBLE YOUR GAS MILEAGE! HERE'S HOW!

Step 1: Sell truck.

Step 2: Buy geo metro.

All they did was put fiberglass skin on the sides of the ranger to make it "look" like an extended cab, it's still a reg cab.
