Switching from 3.08 to 2.73
Right now I want to get better highway mileage I currently get just under 23 mpg. I wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions, thoughts, concerns about putting a 2.73 gear set in place of my stock 3.08. I am also planning on replacing the stock differential with a LSD differential out of a 01 Mustang. I have looked for the 2.73 gear sets and all I can seem to find are pinion gears with 30 splines and the stock splines are 28, so I would have to get a new pinion yoke to accept the 30 splines.
Pleease let me know if you have anything to offer up.

I'll do the math to reduce any odometer error
Tuesday I filled up my tank at the station right by my house I drove to work and back and on wednesday I went to work and back. Today I filled up my tank with 10.010 gallons. My trip to work is 54.33 miles according to Mapquest 54.33*4=217.32 miles
217.32/10.01= 21.71 My odometer must be off just a bit because I calculated it when i filled up and had 22.8

I got 28 in my ranger going from vancouver to calgary and back. As for 2.73's does the truck even have enough torque to hold OD with that high of a gear? I know for me I had the sohc and 3.73's and personally I wouldn't have wanted the truck geared hardly any higher.

I'm also guessing that you won't gain mileage with taller gearing beyond what it has. It seems like the engine is going to be working harder being below it's power band. Not to mention the cost of the ring and pinion, bearings and install. Even if you gain 1mpg it is going to take some time to make up the cost in saved gas.
