LSD on 2000 Ranger 2wd XLT
Hey guys, I'm brand new to this site, and I have a question I couldn't seem to figure out while surfing the web.
I just bought a 2000 Ranger Reg Cab Xlt 2wd 5spd with only 67k.
I absolutely love it so far. However, I live in PA, where we get a bit of snow in the winters. From what I know, and what I've read, my truck just has a regular open differential.
Now, I would love to put in a posi-traction or lsd, whichever Ford calls them in my truck instead to get better traction in the winter and in dirt. What ones will fit, as in a direct bolt on. I imagine that the 4wd rangers came with one, or did they only come with a locking differential?
Could you guys help me out? Also, the engine is the 2.5L, I'm not sure if that would matter with the size of the driveshaft or number of splines..

not all 4WD rangers came with a limited slip in the rear.. there is actually alot of them that are open.. would be a little bit better if u knew what axle u have.. im gunna go ahead and geuss u had the 7.5.. with either 3.73 or 3.55 gears... and not really sure if anyone makes a limited slip for this axle.. for the 8.8.. i think the name if it is trac-lok or something like that.. im sure more experience people with this will chime in

auburn makes a 7.5 posi carrier mycost at work is 250, so i guess they retail for arond 4 maybe? and what do you consider a direct bolt on? like bolt on the ring gear to the carrier and pressing on new bearings, and shimming it correctly and setting the pattern. and i dont think ford makes actual "lockers" just a factory posi.

To be honest, I've never worked on a differential before. I've only had front wheel drive cars before too so this is all kinda new to me. Does changing out a differential require pressing new bearings and such? I would imagine that the splines of the driveshaft would fit into the differential housing and the axles would as well or am i just being ignorant towards the whole idea?
I'm not sure what gears or axle I have. I'm at school right now and only got the truck a week or two ago and only have driven it a handful of times. It has the longer wheelbase with the 7 ft bed if that would help determine the axle diameter and length.

what tires are you running and how many miles do they have left? LSD is usually a good idea, but if you are in the market for new tires anytime soon, I have heard tons and tons of praise for the BFG A/T's in snow. You could kill two birds with one stone. and everyone likes to kill stuff with rocks!

Sorry to bring this tread up from the dead but I just couldn't find that much when I searched. I have the same truck as guy who started this tread. I'm looking to just add an LSD to put in the stock 7.5 rear end. I just looking for better traction and piece of mind when I launch my jetski from the sand. I saw on some website that the Ford racing Trac-loc for the v6 mustang might work. Is this true or what are my options?
