Alright y'all I was wondering what could I do for my truck to drive at lower RPMs . For example in over drive my truck is running 2k RPMs at 50 mph this is horrible saying a f150 is way lower then that. I just thinks its way to high cuz at 70 I'm at 2500 RPMs so I'm thinking you could change gear ratios or something . I'm just looking for ideas of I can do. I know I would have to bring it to a shop and stuff but I just wanna help get better mpgs and such. I only have 31s on my truck . I have a 04 ranger 4.0l 4x4

 

Get used to it. Sounds like you have 4.10s. If you put 3.73s you might be ok but anything lower (is this the right way?) like 3.55s and your rpm will be too low. You will also use more gas since you will be accelerating harder to try and get the same performance.
Of corse you have to ask, is the re-gear gonna be traded off with the savings of fuel?

As for the f150 being at less rpms, the v8 it has doesn't have to work as hard as yours and my 4.0L.

 

Leave it as it is.

Lowering the RPM's is not a good thing on little motors that are in Rangers. You can't compare any Ranger motor to a fullsize V8 motor. Apples to oranges.

The smaller motors need to rev higher and are happier that way. You will get better mileage this way as well as a longer service life.

Operating at low RPM's below the powerband lugs the motor and puts unnecessary strain on it. Plus your mileage will plummet as well as your passing power.

2k at 50 mph is PERFECT. That means you are running right around 2200-2300 at the highway speed limit. And 2500 at 70 is also a great running RPM.

Hell I run 2650 RPM's at 65 mph, with 33's and 4.88's and I get BETTER mileage than when I had 3.73's and 31's going 70 mph (2100 RPM's). 19.21 mpg versus 15.87 mpg.
