Axle seals and fluid change

Finally got around to changing that busted axle seal. Was really easy. I didn't do the bearings or anything extra because they still felt good and I'm hoping to get a new axle before long. Anyways on with the pics....

Straight nasty!!!

No noise. I know they aren't in the best shape, but they're gonna have to do for now. Gotta save my money for better things.

They were just a mess, soaked in oil and just about wore slap out. I cleaned everything up and I'm letting them soak in degreaser overnight. I'll finish cleaning up tommorrow and see how everything looks.

i understand that. they do make a repair bearing kit for the 8.8 that moves the bearing further out on the shaft incase it does become an issue.

I'm going to be doing this same job this weekend. The only part that i'm unsure about is, what is the reason of taking out that bolt in the differental, and what is the torque spec for that?

In addition to this... I have a 4.10 L/S... 05 4.0 v6.... what gear lube and friction modifier do I use? Can I get the modifier any place besides ford?

Should I go ahead and change anything else while this is open?

I used Lucas brand that has friction modifier in it already. Or you can go with Royal Purple but it's a little more expensive. Just make sure it says Limited Slip on the bottle and your good to go.

I looked at those while I was at Autozone, they were like $30 something a piece. But that was before I pulled the shaft.

You have to take the bolt out so you can remove the pin which lets you get the axles out.

I found this http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/...d.php?t=144780 It says 15-30.

If you have the money to spend I would change it all, bearings and seals.

Got eveything cleaned up and put back together. So far everything's good to go. I was a little worried about how easily the c-clips came off and went on, but all the wheels are still on it. lol
