Icon7 occasional clicking and grinding

I was just wondering if anyone can help me out. I just bought a 03 ranger edge. this vehicle has the 4.0, auto, 4x4 on the dash. The trucks runs great but occasionally when I place it in four wheel drive it will click and grind, and even after i take it out of 4x4 still makes the noise and will clunk like the hub finally disengages and then it stops. It acts like the hubs are not locking in but as a mechanic I do not see any auto hubs looks just like a front drive set up. What else could this be when it is making the noise the 4x4 is working, and it don't sound like it is coming from the transfer case. Any help would be great.

Yeah a lot of people convert them to the old school manual hubs the vacuum lock ones they use now can be kinda problematic.
