Well I posted before this one the pics of my rear end and gears. My spiders broke to peices and peirced through my dif cover. So I got a new carrier from I beilive his name is TROJANMAN523(THANKS). So I installed it today and moved the axles and driveshaft to check for grinding or play and I didnt see anything that looked bad. So I put the cover on and filled the rear end up with lube and took it out for a test drive.

The thing about that is it whines really bad. It whines through all the gears and kinda quiets down at about 45-50 mph.

Is this normal for new gears? Do I need to go back in there and set the backlash again?

If you know how much snow we got here in Ohio you would understand what I have been going through without my 4x4. My buddy has a F-150 2wd and he got stuck in his driveway out in the country. So good thing I got my truck fixed so I went over to see if the gears are tough enough to handle pulling him out. Yep got him out in no time. Burned the hell out of the clutch though.

The question is, do I have to go back in there and fix something? Or is the whining noise normal? It is a 7.5 3.73. 2000 Ranger 3.0 4x4.

Does it quieten down when you let off the gas? It almost sounds like the pinion or carrier lash is not right.

 

It sort of quits down but not much. It seems like at around 30-40 mph it is the loudest. But then after 40 it quits down. I dont know the first thing about setting the backlash. I probably should not have even done the swap myself but I dont have enough money to take it to someone and have it done.

 

I would start with checking or having someone check the pinion and the carrier lash.

 

shot you back a im on yahoo, i think its because its mis matched gears. id have to pull the pinion out and send it too ya, but youll need new bearing for them.

 

my truck does it a bit every now and then....not all the time......dont have a clue what it is....when i let off the gas it quiets down......might be the gears but wouldn't it do it all the time.....loudest is about 60 mph whenever it does it...

 

Am I reading that he used his old pinion with a ring gear from a different gear set? If so, that is a very big no-no. Even though gears have the same ratio, they are a "matched set", thus the reason that you cant buy just a pinion or a ring gear. Hopefully you have caught it in time and have not damaged the "newer" ring gear.

 

It could be a pinion bearing or worn gears. The reason it does it when you accelerate, is because under load it will "push" the pinion gear deeper into the ring gear causing an incorrect mesh; then when you let off the pinion doesnt have a load on it and the ring gear will push the pinion back off some. Kind of hard to explain, but I think thats clear.

 

i understand what you are trying to say......

my gears, bearings, crush sleeve and everything else are brand new....they only have around 1,500 miles on them....

 

it doesn't do it when i accelerate, but when i am at a constant speed......and not all the time either.....

 

Hmmmm...may want to double check your pinion depth. What brand of gears did you use? I know Richmond has been known to make noise but usually at the 40-50mph range.

 

the gears a Genuine Gear brand.....mine make noise in the 40-60 mph range......the guy who installed the gears (my gf's uncle who owns his own shop) checked everything.....once when they 1st went in and then again after 500 miles just to make sure....he said everything was set properly.....showed me the marking compound on the gears and how they meshed.....the hit directly in the center of each tooth...

 

It must just be the "nature" of that brand of gear. I never understood why some make noise and some dont when set up properly. Like I said earlier, I know Richmond is known for noise.
