Tranny gave out...manual swap questions?
I had a 3rd gear mis-shift problem for the past few days. Tranny finally gave way tonight. This is the 4th problem with the auto...I've had one too many.
I found a bunch of manuals on ebay, what else do I need? Reason I'm asking is I'm not 4 wheel drive, I looked at maurice's thread, but I'm just not really sure what else I need.
My other option is to drop the 800 on the refurb 4r44e and call it a day.
And third and final option...trade her in and get the cummins I've been wanting :)

If you trade with a blown tranny you wont get anything for the truck. I'd fix it and just keep driving it. If it's paid off dont get into another payment. I know I might get slammed for this, but there are a couple people the put the 700r4 in their ranger and its a better transmission and the swap shouldn't be that hard. The manual tranny in a ranger isn't much better then the automatic.

the 700r4 swap was done on the 4.0's.....I don't think they have an adaptor for the 3.0's.....
Every part on my list in the How-to you will need.....except you will need a 2wd transmission......
Honestly now would be a great time to get a 4wd transmission and t-case to put in.....even if you don't install the front axle right now, the t-case will be there......it won't hurt a thing for the t-case to be hanging out, waiting for the front axle....

The only problem with the 4x swap is that the tx case costs $ and the rear DS costs$. Otherwise, I'd probably do it. But I don't have a need or plan to convert *this* truck to 4x4. Too much wasted money IMO. Only time I would need 4x is wheeling, which I'm not doing in this truck. But if I had the extra $, I'd probably do it for sure
the part I'm curious about (which I couldn't find documented in the how to) is the part where you take off the auto and put on the new transmission. That and bleeding the clutch. I'm really mechanically inclined, but never did the auto-maunal swap before.

getting the auto tranny out is easy since you have a body lift......there are 7 bolts that hold the bell housing to the block, the cut the cooler lines, take off the small inspection plate cover and remove the torque converter to flywheel bolts (you will have to rotate the engine by turning the crank pulley), remove the transmission crossmember, slid the tranny back and then drop it down.......installing a clutch and new flywheel are easy as sin and can only go on 1 way....
Billy is right, the manual transmission does have a lower towing rating, BUT if you get a stronger clutch than stock, and you know how to drive it, you will be fine Ricky...

Thanks maurice. I'm pretty good with a manual. I'm not pushing the torque rating of the transmission so much. Trailer is 1200lbs and bikes are 700 each. I'm at about 2600 roughly. It should be cakewalk but my truck struggles.
I'm looking foward to manny swap unless the shop figures out my problema nd it's simple.
