For those that have done clutches and that damn slave.....

Quick questions. I'm in the middle of it, and am planning for tomorrow. Stupid slave went out again....

#1. Did you need to remove the exhaust to get the trans out? I've got the tcase off, looks like I MIGHT be able to persude it out. REALLY do not want to deal with the rusted nuts on the exhaust.....oh yeah, 01 4.0 ext cab

#2. Has anyone found a decnet slave cylinder, one that may last more than 60k?

#3 Did you use the tool to get the hydro line off the bell housing? If so, where did you get it,a nd how well did it work? If not, got any other shadetree tricks to get that thing off?

Anything else, please feel free to give me a heads up...

#1. You HAVE to remove the Y-pipe. I tried without removing and no luck. spray some TC11/PB Blaster/WD40 to loosen them up, and just take it easy...i'm still running the stock nuts and stock studs with 4 times i've dropped that Ypipe. When you put it all back together, dab on some anti-seize on the threads of the studs. I did that the first time and it's gorgeous.

#2. None of mine have lasted more than 60k. Stock one went out at 50k. next one got swapped out due to bad trans. Next one swapped out due to bad master(wrong diagnosis). I'm currently running a Raybestos and is running just geat for the last 10k!

#3. My last 3 times dropping the trans, I didn't use the tool. Used two small screwdriver. This most recent time, WAS A PAIN! Fightin' with it and couldn't get it. Called up to local auto parts stores and they had it. $6. And believe me....I should have bought that tool so many years ago. It works flawlessly. Takes a second to get used to it, then it's gravy.

If you are replacing your clutch as well, which i suggest, Get yourself some external torx sockets for the flywheel bolts. I destroyed probably 6 out of the 8 bolts trying to get them bolts out with 6/12 pt sockets, destroying about 7 sockets as well.

Saw that post about the bolts, I have a set but do you know the size offhand?
Also heard that the Raybestos is a good one, hopefully Napa or someone local can get it soon...where did you get it? Don't want to wait for Rockauto to send it .

Does the Y pipe use studs? I may have to grind the nuts off, 120k in the Northeast salt is miserable. I already boogered one up pretty good.

Yup, clutch goes w/o saying,,,dont's want to do this more than I have too, and the dumb slave already sprayed fluid all over it anyway.

I was wondering where the fluid was going for the past couple weeks/months (slave has been getting worse, knew it was coming), turns out when I jacked up the rear to put it on stands, all the old brake fluid dumped out of the bellhousing.

I'll go out and check my socket i bought....

The Ypipe mounts to the manifolds via studs onthe manifold. I pulled the last cat pipe off too...if those studs break between the Ypipe and the last cat pipe...it's no biggie. Pound them all out and use 3/8" bolts. I had to do that.

I got my slave at Schucks/Kragen/Checker...in stock too... gaurented for life too...so that's awesome for when it goes again.

Wow, next time I'm paying someone for this POS...
So far, broken bolt in the t case (no biggie, just drill out and use a bolt), 3 broken studs on the manifolds, NO IDEA how to get those out they are so crusty...and the trans is till in the truck.

What a ****ing pain in the *** this is....

Man the only thing I can say about the Y pipe is don't cut it. I was SOOO stupid for doing that. I ended up where I couldn't get the bolts off. I did have air tools at the time so I couldn't get a cut off wheel in there and just cut the y pipe on the two ends that came down. **** me for being so stupid. i have leaks like a mother now because of it. i'm goign to end up having to get a new y pipe because of it.

OK, a few hundrad cubic feet of acetylene and O2 later we got the studs out!
Got all new crap coming from Ford, Raybestos slave coming from Rockauto (no one local could get it), clutch today.

Any special procedure for reinstalling the flywheel? simple star pattern? Anyone know the torque specs of those bolts offhand?

LOL.....umm....how did i do my flywheel?.....hmmm....

honestly, don't remember the toque spec, but i went half that spec in star pattern, then full onto specified torque. I used red locktite too. When torquing down, I just happend to also turn the crankshaft...so i held onto that flywheel for dear life to not turn the crank while tightening. have fun! lol. I think there's a special tool for doing this like on little briggs and stratton engines though.

Went and searched through my 01 ranger service manual...... Flywheel bolts = 60ft/lb

Just imagine what the shop would charge you when they had the same probs that you are having....
