A 91~97 manual 1354 case would be compatible with your front driveshaft. 91~94 cases should have the correct speedometer drive for your 94 but I'm not 100% sure that 95~97 are compatible.
AFAIK, you don't necessarily need to wire anything to the case. The VSS is already wired for your current case and you can reuse it. If you want the 4x4 and 4LO indicator lights in the cluster to work, just add 2 wires between the T/C and the cluster.

I'm not an expert on this at all but I think the 2.9's used a 1350 case. The 1350 may bolt up to the transmission the same way but it was rated for less input torque. From the factory, Ford always used the stronger 1354 behind the 4.0 Ranger/Explorer. The 1354 to 1350 swap has been done before successfully but I just want you to be aware of the torque rating difference before you start.
Another thing: take a close look at how the yoke for the front driveshaft is set up. I have no direct experience with the 1350 but have read that the front output yoke is configured differently from the 1354. http://www.therangerstation.com/tech...sferCases.html
Regarding the wiring, I'm saying that there is a VSS sensor on your current case and you would need to transplant it to the replacement case. This should not require any changes to the harness.
If you want the original 4WD cluster indicators to work, 2 wires would need to be run from the switch on the manual case up to the cluster.
