Acting up? Tranny?

I was pulling my dads boat to the lake with him the other day. We hit some hills the Ranger downshifts and it seems like it slips or hesitates for a quick second then shifts. Today the GF and I hit the lake and the same thing happened. It doesn't do it every time but to put a number on it 1 out of 3 or 4 times. Tonight I'm leaving the GF house and I back out of her driveway, complete stop, then put it into drive and I move about 1 or 2 feet then I hear this aweful grinding sound. It sounded like when I go wheeling and I grind my skids across some rocks, kind of like a metal on metal sound. I did have the e-brake on but I released it and I could tell it disengaged when I released it. I'm guessing something is up with my tranny, but I'm not sure. I'm around 52k miles and I think I have until 60k for my powertrain warranty. Any experts out there think this could be my problem? Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

EDIT: After some quick searching it looks like my 2005 might only go until 3 or 36 for the powettrain. On Ford's websote the 2009's have the 5yr 60k. I'll have to hunt down and check out my paperwork.

Did you do the heavy towing with the "O/D" disengaged?

Tranny doesn't have to work as hard because it doesn't upshift to the higher O/D, which really doesn't provide enough power when you're towing anything substantial, doesn't keep hunting for that higher O/D gearing.

I've heard of extended towing with the O/D engaged ending up ruining trannys.

(Applies to automatics, obviously)

Dont know about your problem, but Ford transmissions are very freaky, according to my dad. They sometimes act weird, then the next day act perfectly fine.

A few days after I posted this I my engine was running really rough. It eneded up being the engine running on 5 cylinders as a spark plug went out. I think that when I got on heavy on the gas and the tranny downshifted that the plug was fouling. I know this doesn't explain the lound grinding/clunk but it hasn't happened since. Thanks
