Not a good choice for street use.

wouldn't that be more like a spool then a locker ?

spools are locked up all the time where a locker locks up only when one wheel slips.

Correct, the welded spider gears allow no differential action, ever, just like a spool. It causes accelerated tire wear and can even break axles when used on high traction surfaces like paved roads.

except for a full time off-road trail truck I see no point.

That is the problem. When going perfectly straight, welded spiders would work OK, even on pavement. Go around a corner and the outside tire must turn faster than the inside tire if they both have traction. With welded spiders, something has to give and the tires usually slip. If they don't slip enough, then something expensive has to break.

I think he's just playing man.

Welded gears are a bad bad idea for anything but a dedicated trail rig for all the reasons that Bob has already elaborated. On the plus side it's cheap and effective (if you're a competant welder of course), but most of us will never have the need for welded gears on our Rangers since they're primarily our daily drivers.
