I think he's just playing man.
Welded gears are a bad bad idea for anything but a dedicated trail rig for all the reasons that Bob has already elaborated. On the plus side it's cheap and effective (if you're a competant welder of course), but most of us will never have the need for welded gears on our Rangers since they're primarily our daily drivers.
