a quick ? about changing tranny fluid...

a quick ? about changing tranny fluid...

im going to be changing out the fluid in my tranny sometime soon..i got 6 quarts of Mercon type fluid...

now when i change the fluid, do i need to get a new gasket? what about a tranny fluid filter? would i need one?

jut checkin b4 i do it so i dont get stuck at home with a f'd up gasket and no ride to autozone...

They hook a machine up to two "nozzles" behind my headlights and run the machine until the fluid is pink in the tube. Quick and painless :)
So um..yeah I can't help but good luck! :)

ugh......haha

i read i think on RPS that u remove the tranny fluid pan under the truck and let it all drarin out, change the filter if u need to, then replace the pan and pour fluid in the tranny fluid dipstick spot...

I think that's what I read too....just before I decided to let my friend do it :)
You should use Amsoil man...I'm no dealer or anything but from what I've read it's the best of the best. Just don't want your pink machine to crap out anytime soon :)

Check your owner's manual for the correct fluid type. Many Ranger automatics take Mercon V which is not the same as Mercon. Your trans takes almost 10 quarts but most of it is not accessible by dropping the pan. That's why the oil changers pump it out.

It would be an excellent idea to change the filter while you have the pan off and, yes, the pan takes a gasket.

A clean work environment is absolutely necessary when working on an auto trans. Even more critical than the inside of the engine. Any dirt or gasket debris will bite you later.

Yes thats how you do it. I'll be help full for ya.

Yes buy a filter, Yes buy a gasket. I think the two together are 40 bucks from the dealer, buy it wherever.

Losen all the bolts holding the pan on, do not remove them. Remove the ones from one corner to allow it to drain a little. The pan will be heavyer than you think with the 5quarts in it.

Do it with the truck COLD (more on that in a minute)

Look near the exhaust pipe, there may be a heat shield cliped on that will need to be removed.. be sure to remove this or it will hold the pan half on and you will be taking a tranny fliud bath.. ask me how I know, I dare ya... oh and it doesnt taste good either..

after its all drained clean the metal gunk off the magnet in the pan, wipe out your pan with a clean, lint free rag, and reattach

pour fluid in the dip stick tube till full.

DO NOT RUN THE TRUCK WITH NO FLUID IN THE PAN

Have fun


TIP: The way they change the fluid at the "Jiffy Lube" type place is to cycle it through the machine, which in doing so can stir up the junk in the dirty filter and cause you more problems than it is worth. So if its been a while it is allways best to drop the pan and change the filter

my brother is a mechanic at the ford place and i'll be getting him to help me...actually do it for me....so i should be fine..

With a %10 discount a flush and filter change at the dealer was $153.98
Firestone will do it for around $100
Flushing the transmission is the only way to get all the fluid out
Just make sure they still drop the pan and change the filter

Filter and gasket kit at the dealer was only $29.95
Any Ford dealer will discount a service ticket by %10 - you just have to ask

haha, yeah, my pink machine is runnin fine...it has good engine days and bad...hopefully i'll get it modded out a bit more when it gets warmer...

I don't have a 2000 owner's manual but my 2003 says between 9 and 10 quarts for a complete change and refill. Like I said, you probably won't even be able to get half that out from dropping the pan, though - a bunch of it stays in the torque converter and elsewhere.

Same thing for the 98-00's its ~10quarts. And from the pan you can get 5-6 depending if you ran it or not, it settles there like the oil. You have to be real carefull doing a flush that you dont let the Torque Converter go dry, it will cause all sorts of problems, again ask me how I know

I'm going to be flushing ALL of the fluid out of my tranny this weekend with couple friends, with AMSOIL of course. None of us have ever flushed an auto tranny before, so we'll see how that goes! lol

if you have no other coupons or discounts in effect and they are charging you the full $94 per hour for labor, then yes you are entitled to %10 off - just ask - all they can say is no, but if they want you back they won't.

Amsoil's method for a full fluid change. This is a bit ballsy but should work. You have to pour quickly to keep it from running dry:

Thats how I know.. I did it the Amsoil way and well.... went to go for a trip around the block and it slipped VERY VERY bad the whole way back. It got better and better, but took over a month to fully recoup from that... so yea.. bad experiance.

im just gonna take the blazer to aamco and let them do it... its 75 to flush it and change the filter too...
