i'm going to try to find a 4.10 rearend and snag it. i need to regear, it's been a while.

it's going to be my first time to the yard, what tools do i need to bring to get a rearend off?

any and all sockets you have, bfh,jackstands/floorjack (depends on how the yard sets their vehicles)

 

hope the tranny isnt broken in the donor vehicle...little story...
mine was in a ranger with a bad tranny...couldnt take the driveshaft off cause i couldnt put the vehicle in park

 

I take my 26 inch craftsman tool box with all my box wrenches, ratchet wrenches, screw drivers, some type of persuasion(I have a small sleg) mechanics gloves, and my craftsman 160 piece socket set, that's on a normal visit, just in case I see some thing I want for later on.

in short take what ever you can

the boneyard here has wheel barrows, and all the cars are held up on the frame with 4 sets of 2 rims welded together with the wheels already off. most places I've heard of have all the cars divided into they're company makes (ford, gm, mopar, and import)

if your looking for posi trac they are already gone, limited slip are easier to find, but when I was hunting I couldn't find anything higher than 3.73, but then again where I live has a lot of people looking for parts for drag cars on the cheap(I guess they aren't in it to win it)

that's the basic's, good hunting.

 

Honestly.....go out to your truck...see what you'll need by putting sockets on your axle, ubolts, shocks, etc. I only like to pack what I'll need in my toolbox when I go.

Don't forget something to hold the driveshaft in place(screwdriver or pipe wrench) while you're using the 12pt 12mm to unbolt the driveshaft.

I know ford liked to change the size of socket used to undo the ubolts...so bring couple. I like to use my 1/2" drive 18" craftsman ratcheting pivoting head breakerbar. Some dykes or hacksaw to cut the brake line and wiring off the speed sensor. Don't forget your donor axle may have a rear sway bar...i have no clue what that takes to take off(tool wise).

No jackstands or jack needed usually...unbolt the ubolts and muscle it til it drops to the ground. All yards in my area have their inventory on stands already.

 

pack light ima say that right now atleast here in florida its a hot freekin summer and ya dont wanna be lugging around 7 pounds of tools i would tell ya to call some of the smaller places first befor goin to the most well known one because the coffers/LKQ here unless you go on a wed you aint gonna find nothin but a bunch of ford skeletons

Sawzal. The junkyard i use cut everything when i picked one up before. They took it off and had it ready for me the next day. Everything looked fine. They cut a couple things that could have been removed and sold though. Oh well

 

some yards dont allow sawzalls or torches
