my abs brake light came on so i checked my brakes and everything is good rotor and pad, etc.. nothing is on the sensor or rubbing anything. well when i went to put my tire back on my passenger side ive noticed that when i pushed my tire at the top and bottom it moved an awful lot. and when i did the drive side it didn't move at all so i know there is a problem with the passenger side wheel. so that is normally caused by a wheel bearing right? thanks in advance.

 

Yes top to bottom play is caused by a loose wheel bearing or a bad one. If i were you i would check the tightness of that wheel bearing go through the procedures of tightening it again and see if that quells your problem. If not time to replace them.

 

im just going to replace both front ones. do i need the wheel bearing or the hub assembly that comes with it?

 

Thats a good thing to do. Are you 4x4? If so you have sealed bearings. If not you have an inner and an outer bearing on each side so you will need for wheel bearings total and grease seals. Don't forget you bearing grease. Also if you bearings are damaged you will need to drive out your old races in the rotor assembly and drive the new races in. Only if your 2wd.

newer SLA 4x4 trucks take that sealed unit. if its 4 wheel abs you take that one with the abs sensor if not there is one with out the sensor..

 

Ok my bad didn't read the part about the sensor. Ok so yah you need that one with the sensor. Im sure thats not cheap....

The 2wd rotors I always get have the races formed into them......as I'm sure the majority of them are. The races that come with the inner and outer bearings are just paper weights.

 

Yah but if you messed up a bearing and your rotor is fine why waste the money on a new rotor when you can just use the races they gave you.

there not Formed in.. they are pressed in.. and are supposed to be replaced with the new bearings with its matching new race... we have had this discussion before

 

thanks D! i think i have checked everything on both front tires. the ball joints seem to be fine. the rotor seems to be scraping on the cailper just a lil bit so probably going to replace those soon too.

 

I personally never had this discussion before. I've put new bearings into new rotors without any problems or wear issues before. Guess there are different types out there and different ways of installing them. The supplied races have always become paper weights. Different strokes for different folks.

 

*if* the rotor is brand new with the race in it and your putting new bearing in thats fine. but if you are replacing the bearing and using the old rotor they ARE SUPPOSED to be replaced. the race that you arnt replacing if warn does not match the cone shape of the new bearing thus can causing premature failure...
