Hey i'm very new to this and this is my first post wish it would be better than asking for help but I need it.

I have a 04 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 (Automatic) has about 62K on it. Its been driven pretty well, very good condition.

Today I was on my way to school and was backing up in reverse to get a parking spot then shifted into Drive the truck revved and then slammed into gear. I also have had the problem of hard shifts. The engine revs to 3000 rpm I let off and it slams into second gear.

Any help would be appreciated thank you.

 

Have you checked the fluid level? My last ranger did that when it was low on tranny fluid.

 

Its been checked up to date and i swapped the transmission fluid already like 2 months ago when the truck hit 60K miles on it. So i don't think its the fluid but ill check that again.

 

I had a similar problem with the '07 Ranger 4L v6. when shifting into reverse there was sometimes a few seconds delay, especially when shifting from drive into neutral, and then into reverse. I went to a local dealer for fluids change (300$ later) and thought to ask about a flash upgrade for the o.b. computer and was told they'd have to investigate first. I saw dollar signs in his eyes and just went to another dealer in a smaller town and asked what my truck was worth to them on trade. They offered me a good price so I said goodbye to the '07 and took advantage of the current rebates Ford is offering. Got it a little over 10 grand cheaper than sticker price with trade. Day 2... no delay in shifting at all. Couldn't be happier (so far).

Nope. Far as I knew I had a great vehicle. I bought it at the end of July with 52000km from someone, who for medical reasons, decided to give up his licence. It apparently already had the (intermittent) reversing issue, so I googled it and learned about the flash upgrades available. Shifting isn't truly mechanical, it's apparently computer controlled. anyways when I brought it in for routine fluid flush after getting it rust checked (oil sprayed) for the winter, i thought to ask the guy in the tie at the service counter. I'm quite sure I could have persisted and got the flash but I was kinda turned off by his quick reply that would cost me more money. Why not just give my o.b. computer a flash and let me try it out? Anyways they lost my business on the spot.

 

Business's can't just give stuff away, even if you did just do business with them. It takes time and equipment to do and they have to pay for both of those.

That being said, I wasted some of my time for you. I have found that a number of 2004 and 2005 Rangers had the incorrect trans oil put in them that may affect/delay/harsh reverse engagement. Dealers are to install one bottle of 5r55se&5r44e trans fluid additive to the customers vehicle.

my brand new 07 auto would slip right off the line, dealership blamed it on the cold. eventually they rebuilt the whole tranny.

 

Just swap to a manual......lol

 

theirs a TSB on this. just get mercon VI and get the additive i got the atf at autozone and additive at ford dealer and the problem is gone. might want to lube up the slip yoke while you at it they have been known to shudder

 

Lube up the slip yoke? Got pics?

 

Lower drive shaft, remove slip yoke boot by undoing the straps, clean with parts cleaner, lube it with grease, re-intall in reverse order
