they just go bad and leak, some last 15k, others last 400k.
it really is a poor design on ford/mazda's behalf.
i replaced my slave and clutch around 130k, it was slipping really bad, the pressure plate or the slave went bad, the clutch still had a decent amount of surface left and the slave was starting to leak.
