Transmission fluid & filter change question

Hello, my ex-father-in-law bought my 15 year-old son a 1999 Ranger XLT 4X2 with around 200,000 miles a couple weeks ago. It runs great and is in fairly good shape and also doesn't appear to be leaking oil or burning any oil but I'm afraid there may be a transmission issue that I would like some advice on. I drove it some today and noticed that the transmission seemed to be shifting a bit hard so when we got home I checked the fluid and instead of nice red fluid it was more brownish. I have no idea if or when the fluid and filter have been changed so my first thought was to drop the pan and change the fluid and filter which I have done several times in the past on other vehicles but in this case I'm thinking I should do more so that I can get most of this old fluid out. I've heard more negative than positive about taking a vehicle in for a flush so I'm wondering if this truck has a drain plug on the torque converter? If not, any ideas on an easy way to get most of the fluid out? What advice do you folks have for us? Thanks in advance!
