98-00 PVH setup/RCD conflict questions....help!

98-00 PVH setup/RCD conflict questions....help!

Not the sportrac stuff but when it gets into the PVH setup and RCD issues with cv's binding.


I've got all the parts to convert my live axle setup to the 98-00 PVH setup to run AVM manual hubs. I'm completely redoing the front 'axle' setup including 4.56's and an Aussie Locker.

Parts list for the swap...

New 98-00 axle shafts/cv's and a pair of used for back-ups
New 98-00 hub/bearing assemblies
New AVM hubs(Branded under the name "Rugged Ridge") http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...137817174&rd=1
and I beleive Jason(rngprerunner) said I'm going to need a pair of c-clips for the axle shafts.

Now I'm kinda worried about trashing cv's(more frequently) going with this older setup, especially with the addition of the aussie up front. I wasn't aware of the issues with the PVH and RCD until I read that thread. How much realistically would the axle shafts need to be extended to compensate for the spacer offered for the 01+ setup? What length limit strap would I need or how would I measure to find out what length strap is needed. I plan on buying new coils here too before long. Should I go ahead and buy the new coils now before I get too far in if the axle shaft extensions or limit straps would be affected by the new coils. Only reason I ask is because they are going to be 700lb coils and the ones on the truck now(originals) sag a good bit and new coils will bring up the front another 1.5" to 2".

I would limit travel to about 8 inches to be on the safe side. Strap length will depend on mounting location.

Have tried to to get a drive line shop to lengthen the cv's?

i didnt read the thread but how can they relate it to the pvh? i mean i thought the reason it didnt work was because the knuckles are not made for pvh

new coils wont change you limit strap length. IMHO limit straps are not needed due to the travel in the shock toppin out before CV bind. BUT with PVH shafts, YMMV.
the spacer is .250" thick. if you get your shafts lengthened, make it the same amount.

beard, the RCD woks w/PVH ONLY if converted to manual. due to the knuckle not being set up for vaccum. however, RCD doesnt have a spacer for the PVH shafts. a spacer would cause engagement issues with the splines in the hubs, as i understand the issue.

i havnt had an issue with mine yet, and i have pushed it pretty hard.. i tore a boot but thats all i have done

Where does this magical spacer go?

Any one have installed pics?

I was unaware of this problem as well.......how does the superlift kit avoid the use of spacers? Or does that kit use them as well? Does the need for a spacer come from the shape of the knuckle or what?

it goes behind the hub, and is on the CV shaft.

Wow. I can see how you can lose the connection from the hub then.

Doesn't the superlift kit use drop brackets to lower the front differential to avoid this issue?


At the cost of these lift kits a SAS looks better and better.

The RCD drops the front differential as well......

on the account of i live in WY and IFS sucks in rocks.. i wish i had gone with a SFA.. lol
