Rear End Noise...What Could it Be?

Once I get above 20 MPH or so, there is a whine sound that comes from the rear end. It is definitely a rotational noise that happens at a certain point of what I believe are the rear drum brakes. As soon as I apply the brakes, the noise goes away. I get back on the gas or neutral and the noise continues At first I thought it was a bearing, but it seems like the brakes are the cause. What exactly on the brakes could be causing this noise? Lack of grease? I need your input.

because your brakes lack grease.. thats it.

could be worn out
could have crap jammed in there
could be some metal touching metal vibrating.

you just gotta go look.

This is an older thread, but just figured I would give an update...

Got around to inspecting the rear drum brakes today. Gave them a good cleaning and fresh grease, but the noise is still there. Plenty of life left in them. Wheel bearings are in good shape too. Any thoughts?

check the fluid on in the diff for metal shavings and milky color. metal shavings are obvious but milky diff fluid is water in the diff. might change it while your there.
u could always drain it and pull the cover and check things out.

Fluid and such is all good.

I just checked the U-joint. When in neutral there is a decent amount of side to side play. When in gear, there is still a little amount of play, but nothing like it is when in neutral. Should the U-joint be replaced?

Could the U-joint be the cause of the noise? If so, I don't understand how the U-joint can affect the noise that is happening when the brakes are engaged/disengaged.
