Rear axel replacements options

So I was thinking about replaceing my whole re-end with an FX4L2 rear and then I thought well what the next step better after that ? Is there a 8.8 35 spline or is the 9 inch next ? The ford 8.8 28 and 31 spline rears are what dana 30 or 35 or what ?

stick with the 31spline level II axle alot less work making it work on the truck and it will handle all you need unless you start boring out and stroking the 4.0L you will be fine

no go to the explorer 8.8s. they have the same spline count shafts as the lvl2 (or should i say lvl2s have the same count as exploder 8.8s...) and the exploder has disc brakes. you could go to a nine inch if you wanted but it would be overkill for your setup I say.

they are not dana axles. ford axles are not made by dana and dan are not made by ford. they have no affiliation. Although dana/spicer is used in pretty much every OE vehicle, a lot of the times manufaturers will use their own rear axles...

EDIT: not to mention the lvl2 has a torsen L/S and I think youde be better off getting an pen carrier and locking it. Youll love it much more than the torsen...

Just make sure you get something with 6.72 gears in the front though.

Hell i'd rather have a stock rear-end and replace the ***-IFS than upgrade the rear.

But what do I know?

ok guys I get the sarcasum I am just trying to figure out what all this stuff means and how they relate so i can make an educated decision.

Right on the explorer rear, disc brakes would be cool.

What year explorer fits becuase it needs to be before the explorers when to IRS.

My plan is to go with either an RCD or weldtec front, full glass fenders front and rear(rear flareside glass). I don't plan on going bigger then 35's(as much as I want to i know better now) but I might go with a less pizza cutter like wider 35. maybe 35x13.5 or what is the next size wider.

theres a thread about the explorer axles where n3elz says that there is a valve (i believe) in our master cylinders (if it is 4wheel abs) that can be removed at will make it the same as the explorer 4 wheel abs 4 wheel disc master cylinders.

You will have to modify the parking brake cable as well.

They are cheap as hell. You can get a pair (1 non-steer and 1 steer) for about 700-900 bucks. Then shipping (with drums they weight about 850 lbs a peice).

Get a 14 bolt Ben. Cheap as hell and you don't have to do anything to them besides regear.

(and run a 44" tire at least to clear the diff)

My friend got a D60 rear for 100 bucks.

What about the speedometer? Will it work with these other axles? If not what all do you have to change?

Supposibly it will work, because supposibly there is a speed sensor in the tranny/t-case.

But the speed sensor on the ring gear in the 8.8's would have no purpose.

I personally don't think the speedo would work on anything besides the 8.8's.

jey, thats not the speed ring thats the tone ring for the ABS.

youre gonna lose that anyway so it serves no purpose...
