Is your original engine in your ranger a 4.0? If so it will be an easy swap. Oh wait, I don't know, i cant remember when mazda and rangers became the same. Someone will have knowledge. If you don't get a good answer here go to www.therangerstation.com and ask them cause most of those guys have older trucks.

There wasn't a 4.0L available in 1991 B-Series trucks.

Also, the B-Series did not become Ranger based until 1994. 1993 and older Mazda trucks don't share any parts with Rangers.

What engine is currently in the Ranger?

The only way a 1991 Mazda could have a 4.0L is if someone did a lot of custom work. The largest factory installed engine a 1991 B-Series could have is a 2.6L.

An OHV 4.0L from a Ranger, 1994 or newer B-Series or Explorer will fit in place of a 2.9L. They are from the same family of engines. You will likely need all new wiring (make sure it is from a truck with an OHV 4.0L and A4LD automatic) and a new computer though. I'm sure many other parts will need to be replaced too, but it has been done plenty of times before.

We would assume you'd stay in the same family of cars. Jus get whatever engine you want. Find an old school mustang 5.0 and put it in.

A Navajo is an Explorer, so it's actually not a hard swap.

I assumed you were talking about a B-Series. You don't see many Navajos any more, so they slipped my mind.

You will need all of the wiring and the computer from the Navajo for sure. The transmissions should both be A4LDs though. If you can, just buy the Navajo so that you have a good parts vehicle.

Alrighty...I don't know if it'll be easy swap. Navajo = Explorer = Most all Rangers.

Should be an "okay" swap, with all the kwerks of engine swaping have....but more. What engine is in your truck right now?? Is it carburated??

I'm pretty sure the Navajo's 4.0L is TBI, which is fuel injected, so you'll need the computer and wiring to make it all work. If it were me, I wouldn't want to mess around with all the wiring and making everything fit. I'd get a same era engine similar set-up w/o a computer, coming from the same family of truck...ie Ranger Explorer Navajo.

Or go all out, and get a carburated 302...you can pick them things up cheap. Plus, a bunch of ford transmissions fit right to it.

Both the 2.9L he has now and the 4.0L use multiport EFI...but he will probably still need to change the wiring and computer in the Ranger.
