taking apart front diff

ok guys i have this nice little clicking/grinding noise going on with my truck....some people seem to think its in my front differential... so my next day off(tuesday) i am going to tear apart my diff but i need to know what all goes along with this...

thank to superlift i will be taking practically my entire front suspension apart just to get to it...

now what i need to know is 1...how to take it apart and 2....how to put it back together...

any help would be awesome!

thanks

I wouldn't reccommend doing a job like this on your own. There are certain tools needed to properly install the differential and the gears. Aside from the tools you also need the knowledge and experience in installing gears and differentials. The easiest thing to do would be rip the whole front axle out of the truck and see whats wrong with it and go from there. If is something major just drop off the axle at a shop and have them do the rest of the work! Just my .02!

I would also do a close inspection on the CV shafts before you go tearing the whole frontend out. The CVs are known to make a clicking/grinding noise when they are going bad.

The info you need to know is the front differential is not a simple thing. It requires certain tools you probably don't have and an experienced person to teach you or do it. I'd try googling "replace front gears" or something.

what exactly are you looking for, specs? diagrams? good luck? and as long as you dont go replacing anything, you dont need to worry about all the shims and crap, just make sure you put em back in the same order

you may not have to take it all apart[suspension], but like on mine it would probably make it 10x easier

I don't see why you're getting pissy. If you have people who know, shouldn't they be your first source?

I googled and here seems to be a great site..

After looking over the ford service manual i still think that is a job id never try myself. I guess to me its just one of those things that i would drop of at the shop to get done so that i know its done right. If thats something you can do yourself then your the s**t!

you really don't need a lot of those tools. i did the locker install with a socket set, a small screw driver and some axle grease

A lunchbox locker install and a differential tear down is two totally different things.

Oh if thats all your doing then i dont see there being any problems. If for some reason you take off the cover and nothing is wrong in there at least youll be changing the fluid out!
