four wheel drive ?'s

I have a 94 ranger 5spd with the push button tcase when i put the button it goes into 4h prefect but when i follow the instructions to go into 4l it wont do anything u cant hear the tcase motor move or anything. i have tried finding the "sweet spot" in the clutch and just barely touching the breaks does anyone know anyways to test to find out what it really is. how do i test the switch on the dash to c if u need a new switch and that stuff individually i have heard the solenoid for 4l might be bad im not sure whats wrong but i do that since i have 327 gears when i go down my logging road and starting getting into the really rough stuff i want me 4L so i don't have to ride the clutch thanks alot guys im willing to try anything i don't have much money to work with so give me ideas plz

thanks

make sure you step of the clutch and brake rather hard. Try that.

You have to be at a dead stop or under like 3mph. I always stop, push the clutch and brake in and just wait.

yea, like they said, 1) it takes a minute, 2) you have to have the brake and clutch all the way in

what do you mean by 'sweet spot'?

actually if it doesn't shift into 4-Lo within a couple seconds, then there is a problem.....and the brake doesn't matter......

if you can't hear the motor shift, i would suggest taking the motor off (leaving it plugged in) and have someone switch it back and forth from 4-Hi to 4-Lo while watching the motor mechanism to see if it operates......if it doesn't, then a new shift motor is in order....

that is actually fairly common for the shift motor to work into one position and not the other...

Exact same truck here - is yours manual? try putting the trans in reverse (with the clutch in), and pressing the 4lo.

Lemme know if that works for ya.

so, did you use a Ouiji board, or a magic 8 ball to diagnose his issue?

-----------
a shift motor is a pretty expensive guess. there are quite a few controls in the 4LO circuit that do not affect the 4HI circuit. i would isolate and check those before i started throwin parts at the truck.

i dont have a 94, therefore i dont have a 94 EVTM either, so i cannot specifically help you with what to look for. generally, the brake switch, clutch switch, VSS, and neutral switch are common components to be included in the 4LO circuit. a failure of any of these could prevent the shift motor shiftin from 4HI to 4LO.

the most common failure mode i have seen for the shift motor is to lock up completely. it may very well turn out to be a shift motor failure, BUT i would make damn sure i knew nuthin else was the problem first.

search down a wiring diagram and diagnose the complete circuit. i looked on autozone and didnt find one there. maybe a haynes manual, or definitely a EVTM would help.

i got my theory from what happened to my mothers Explorer earlier in the year....it would go from 2-Hi to 4-Hi, but not to 4-Lo....replaced the motor and it works fine.......

actually in '94 model trucks there isn't that many controlls to the motor compared to the '95+ with the OBDII computers.....and even the '98+ have more than the '95-'97.....

taking a shift motor off to check the operation is not hard at all.....and that SHOULD be one of the first things to try.....a truck that old, more than likely the shift motor (if it is the stock motor) is more than likely bad, since he has stated the origonal owner never used 4wd........

sorry man, my crystal ball is in the shop. i cant tell you your exact problem over the internet w/o more information.

takin the motor off and watchin it will ONLY confirm that there is a problem. it WILL NOT confirm whether or not replacing the motor will fix your problem.

good luck.
