One or both wheel bearing hub assemblies on my 02 ranger 4x4 xlt extended cab 4.0 motor. So, at 105,000 miles I decided to replace both hub assemblies. Put one on yesterday and when I tried to plug in the speed sensor the coupling on the new hub was too big.
Back to Autozone. They wanted me to exchange for Duralast, which we found fit the coupling on the truck's wire harness. Told them no I wanted Timken. So I call Timken and they said the shopped the right part, that they were not accountable. Besides, the said, they have not dealt with Autozone for 3 years. Autozone said they'D order 2 couplings I could splice into the existing wire harness for $45 for the pair. I said no. Left there and went to another parts store. Same deal. They sell a cheaper brand that has the right coupling. They adviseD me to check out a local parts warehouse. Same deal. Yet another brand if hub with coupling that fit my truck. So, I call Timken again and explain to them that I found 3 other brands that have the right coupling. The guy hangs up on me. I call back. He tells me I have to deal with Autozone. I made the comment that it looked as though they were shipping hubs with the wrong coupling. He says I have to deal with Autozone. Back at Autozone the guy gets mad that I won't buy a Duralast, since it fit. I told him I wanted Timken.
So he ordered one new Timken and said he'D call me tomorrow and let me know if it was the right coupling.
I'm about to blow my top. Anyone have similar problems fitting Timken to 2002 ranger?

 

Autozone is in the process of switching over to moog for hub assemblies. Any Timken stuff that is on the shelf or at another store is not being replenished. Does your store have an availability of a Moog? It should be similar quality and I know has the same warranty period at AutoZone.

 

Not sure. They tried to sell me Duralast.
From what I've been able to determine Moog is selling junk lately.
One shop did have Moog for $5 less than Timken.
If the new Timken turns out to be the same coupling as the other 2 I bought I may go with the Moog.
By the way, Timken told me over the phone they no longer deal with Autozone.
One big problem is that I installed one side before I noticed the coupling so their warrante at Autozone may not give my money back.
I should know more tomorrow.
I was hoping someone else ran into the same problem buying Timken at Autozone. If they dropped ties with them the bad feelings may play a part in the problem.
I got as far as I could with Timken on the phone.
They did tell me,though that the coupling they now ship has been the same since 2000.
With that in mind, anyone with a 2001 or newet replace a hub with Timken on any 4x4 xlt extended cab 4.0 motor?

 

No, they don't sell Moog but an auto parts store down the road from them sells Moog for $5 less than the $130 I paid for these Timkens.

My problem is going to be getting my money back from Autozone, I suspect. Called Timken 3 times and they pretty much blew me off. Take it up with Autozone, they say. They also told me they quit doing business with Autozone 3 years ago.

Here's a tip I stubbled over reading reviews of Timken. One guy wrote that he had purchased a Timken part and when he got home with it noticed that it has an SKF stamped on the bearing.

I tried searching for hubs for both 2 and 4 wheel abs. No help.
At this point I'D take a bad responce....even mockery. What is going on with Timken? I did a search for wrong sensor plugs and quit a few came up.

 

I just replaced one on my 2011 with a motorcraft part. bearings are stamped timken. I got them from Rock for like$75 under dealer price, shipped.

 

Just received 2 more hub assemblies yesterday. This time from Rockauto. Same deal. Sensor plug that plugs into truck wire harness does not fit.
Is it ok to cut and splice the sensor wire?

I've purchased both 2002 and 2003 hubs and they have the same sensor coupling.
I called Autozone today and they ordered just the sensor cord. It should be there tomorrow. If that doesn't fit then I think I'm looking at a Ranger made by parts a Ford plant worker stole one piece at a time

 

you should have ordered the 2004 model bearings , just to be sure that the connector is the same

 

Looking online I found out Autozone sells sensor cords. So I called them and they said they order 1 and have it the next day.
It turned out to be just a pigtail you splice into the truck's wiring.
Got home and changed out the hub on the other side and someone had already spliced into the truck wire harness with one of these.
Problem solved.

No, I haven't. Never thought of it being the cause.
How do I go about checking it?

 

the is installed on the top area of the rear differential housing

you will see a protected wire harness attached to it , carefully remove the retaining bolt and pry it out

more than likely it is that sensor that has failed , because of the oil that constantly contacts it
