Where I live normally doesn't get this cold for this long. It's been about 3 weeks of temperatures below 15F. Climbed underneath my pickup last night and I've got oil leaking from the front-right axle, as well as from the rear of the manual gearbox, at the driveshaft. Just hit 140,000 miles, and I realize its about that time... but previously, I didn't have any leaks and the undercarriage was dry. Anyone have any experience replacing these seals? Help me! haha

 

Have you gone mudding recently? Is there mud packed around the seals? Might have just been a coincidence but typically cold weather wouldnt create this.

 

No mudding/offroading recently. I had it completely detailed about a month ago, and so my undercarriage is actually pretty clean! I checked for play in both the driveshaft and the axle, and there isn't any, so it's safe to drive to work and back as long as I moniter the fluids, and until I can replace the seals. Driveshaft looks pretty simple but I'm nervous about taking apart my front axle.

 

Cold weather cracking old seals maybe?

 

Remove CV's and replace axle seals?? There's other steps too so keep that in mind. It isn't a huge deal.

The CV's only attach to the inner axle/pumpkin by E-clips. All it takes is a screwdriver or prybar to snap them out from the differential carrier. Replace seal and install CV by pushing them in toward the center of the axle housing. Snaps right into place.
