Replacing a slave cylinder

Hi, I have a 2001 Ranger Edge 2wd manual trans, and my slave cylinder went out. im going to have it repalced, but the guy i talked to wants to charge $180 for labor, how hard is it to replace myself? Is it worth it? Thanks for any info.

180 is a hell of a good deal... to change the slave you need to remove the tranny since its inside the bleehousing... while he is in there have him do the whole clutch at the same time and resurface the flywheel

Cost me a ton more. Next time I'll do it myself because I need to learn how to change my own clutch, but he's right it's in the bellhousing and it's a booger to get at. If you're pretty good with a wrench you should be ok.

Agreed! Does the guy know where it is, that it's IN the tranny? If so, jump on that deal and do the whole clutch deal....that's what I did, except I had to pay WAY more than that for labor!

If the guy is only charging $180 he probably does not know what he is getting into. $180 is very low for that job.

I didnt know if the slaves were outside or inside, because i had to swap the slave cylinder on my car back in the day and it took like 30 min....but since its on the inside, i would DEFF put in a new clutch and get the flywheel resurfaced, or you will be in the same situation in a year or so....Exspecially if you drove it home with no clutch...

Mine I think has been acting up on me too. I have a little under forty thousand on my truck and I am really not that excited to pay for that. I just had the one in my plow truck (explorer) replaced and it was an $800 bill. If I didn't think the 06's were butt ugly I would trade it in, This truck is slowly becomeing my hard luck truck. I have been lucky until this truck, the only thing I replaced in 80,000 miles on my 01 was the front diff seal. so far this truck has cost me around $1500 in stupid repairs including everything on the rear brakes repaired. I think it might be a sign to get out of this truck. I usually trade in every two years but I held onto this one, because it had so low of miles. I used to do 40,000 miles a year. now I am down to 20,000.

Yeah, I've got 48k and mine is acting goofy too. It wont go in 1st sometimes unless you fight it. Or sometimes the clutch is on the floor, sometimes its in the middle. I dunno. Let us know how much it ends up costing you.

Morph, yours sounds like the master is acting up, mine did the same. Engage low this at that temp middle here there, then high driving a while, then gave up in the morning.
That was a 52,7xx now have 53,2xx and I find that I am losing clutch fluid. Sure enough the slave is wet looking and there is fluid all around the holes in the transmission. I wonder how long it will last before it pukes? Grrr

Eek. As soon as I get enough Cash its going in to have everything in the transmission gone over. I hate being scared to drive my truck!

180 sounds awesome. My local ford dealsership was going to charge around $400 instalation fee for the clutch kit & slave. I'm going to do it myself because I know what I'm doing. I've done 4 clutches, none on a ranger, but really, how hard can it be??
