Error Code PO741 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off
Hey guys - it's been a while!
Quick question regarding this error code.
BTW 2002 Ranger Edge v6 3.0 2wd, 115,000 miles
O/D Light will sometimes come on and start blinking about an hour in on the freeway. Not experiencing any noticeably hard shifting. AAMCO read that code and wants to rebuild the entire tranny - go figure. I had a remanufactured transmission dropped in about 40,000 miles ago and will not drop $2,000 into a truck that is worth $3,000 tops. I just dumped some TRANS-X Fix into the tranny to see if that might help fix it (if it's stuck)
I want to do some troubleshooting and was thinking of dropping the pan for service and try replacing the solenoids (since that is an easy fix).
I just wanted to get your opinions on what could be done to keep this tranny running well and make that error code go away?
Also how hard is it to replace the solenoids and are the tranny solenoids universal?
Again - I am not willing to rebuild the tranny (I will sell the truck before this happens).

A quick search of the interwebs found this tidbit.
Code P0741 TCC Per/Stuck Off
this code is set in the computer by the tss in side the transmission not seeing a change when lock is commanded and using the rpm sensor on the engine. if the two dont match the computer will set this code. this could be because the converter, seal on end of stator shaft on pump, inner seal damaged on pump gear,tcc solenoid, tcc valve,wiring to the processor fo the lockup, wires for the rpm sensor. well hope this helps explain how the code is set.

Thanks for the info.
I don't know if they used it or not. I'm assuming since it was a new tranny, they used a new converter.
BTW, anyone know the easiest way to replace the solenoids and which ones to buy?

There is only 1 tcc solenoid, if you had a shop rebuild it the last time I doubt they put in new a converter let alone new electronics.
Try this
Torque Converter Operation Test
This test verifies that the torque converter clutch control system and the torque converter are operating correctly.
1. Carry out Quick Test. Refer to the On-Board Diagnostics With Diagnostic Tool in this section. Check for DTCs. Refer to the Diagnostic Trouble Code Chart.
2. Connect a tachometer to the engine.
3. Bring the engine to normal operating temperature by driving the vehicle at highway speeds for approximately 15 minutes in (D) position.
4. After normal operating temperature is reached, maintain a constant vehicle speed of about 80 km/h (50 mph) and tap brake pedal with the left foot.
5. Engine rpm should increase when brake pedal is tapped, and decrease about five seconds after pedal is released. If this does not occur, refer to the Torque Converter Operation Concerns in «Diagnosis By Symptom».
6. If the vehicle stalls in (D) or manual 2 at idle with vehicle at a stop, move the transmission range selector lever to manual 1 position. If the vehicle stalls, refer to the Torque Converter Operation Concerns in «Diagnosis By Symptom» in this section. Repair as required. If the vehicle does not stall in (D), refer to «Diagnosis By Symptom» in this section.

So what you're saying is get on the highway, get my truck up to speed, and tap the brake. If the RPM's continue to rise, my TCC is getting stuck and therefore the problem is a bad TCC Solenoid. If the RPM's stay the same and gradually decrease, my TCC is the problem?
What do I want to see happen, and what do I target (replace) if this happens.
