rear diff question

so i was rotating my tires today and while i had the tires off i was giving everything a good shakedown to see if anything was loose. I need new outter tie rod ends up front. But on the rear diff does anyone know how much if any play is allowed at the drum? i can move the axle shaft in and out about 3/8s of an inch on both sides. is this normal? was wondering if maybe my wheel bearings were shot. or could it be something inside the diff??

sounds like it's just play in the c-clips. nothing to really worry about.
