front axles

Icon9 front axles

A friend has a 2000 xlt 4x4 4.0 his front axles are always engaged can anuyone tell me how to fix this

Some 2000 model trucks were live axles, meaning that the front axle is always turning. Take the center cap off the wheel and if there's a large nut there it's a live axle. If the truck is not a live axle and it's a PVH system I'd leave it alone. The PVH system is notoriously unreliable and usually ends up not working when you need it too.

so if it is a live axle is it always in 4wd, or does it engage with the switch

No it means just the front axle is turning, the transfer case is not locked in and sending power up front until you put it in 4wd. As RazorsEDGE said, if it is a live axle leave it be.
