Which gears for best mileage?
I am wondering what gears I should put in my truck for the best MPG. I currently have a 2000 Ranger 4.0L, 4X4 with the 4.10's. I have heard that I could get better mileage with 3.27 or even go to 3.55 to keep some power. Would I also need to change out the front gears for the 4X4? I don't offroad and use the 4X4 when it gets slick on the roads or snowy. Looking for the best MPG. Installing my E-Fan this weekend.
I have a 1967 Mustang and have a T5 running 3.55, it gets 20 on the highway with a very modified V8. I would love to get that with my truck. By the way, I am selling my Mustang, unfortunately.

what size tires are you running? stockers? where do you mostly do your driving?
in the city, 4.10's are your best bet on stock tires....on the highway, 3.73's would be better on stock tires.....
you HAVE to change the front gears to match the rear or you WILL twist your transfer case in half when you put it in 4wd...

I would suggest keeping the gears you have, you will never get your money back from a gear swap. and yes you need to do the front as well.
I would look at these mods...
efan
Xcal 2
under drive pullies
intake
there is a member here running that and some similar performance items and was getting 20mpg from his 1999

Right now there are 265-70-16 on the rims. Going to be going back to stock. I do most driving on the highway. Its just that this 16mpg sucks. I can get some new gears for a great price, so that cost is not my concern. Gas costing $2.79 a gallon is my concern.
What size is the diff up front? 7.5 or 8.8? Maybe a silly question, but this is the first 4X4 I have ever owned. Does mileage suffer in the city with the 3.55's?

its a D35 Hybrid, so is the same as the Jeep rear D35. Its just the bearings and carrier are different.
You should have 4.10s now. if not then you could have 3.73, you need to look in the door jamb and get your axle code. you should have an 8.8 in the rear.
I really do not think this is going to help mpg...
Stock tires and the stuff i mentioned will get you the best mpg. if you change the gearing its just going to bog down and you will loose mpg...

Did you talk to Doug aka Bamachips?
