My A4LD is coming out of my 1993 April built Ranger 3.0l 2WD after it died at 150K miles.

Reading past discussions it seems some later transmissions might fit, but do you need to buy the PCM (power control module) to go with them?

What works?

I may be able to get mine going again, but would like to know about possible swaps
in case I find some used transmission for sale.

We need to know what engine is in the truck? Always a possibility of a manual swap. Not sure what autos are interchangeable.

 

Thanks. The manual swap has a fair amount of work in the pedals, which have to be available too,
so, for now, I'm looking at fixing or replacing the auto trans. I added engine 3.0l to the first post.

 

hmmm. i'd look at maybe having yours rebuilt. Sorry, i'm not to familiar with ranger automatics. Some one else here most likely is though. anyone else?

 

Thanks Paul, but with no great luck getting the trans out of the truck even, I'm sending this vehicle along to a new owner that has a manual trans to put in it. The repair manuals I used did not mention taking off so much exhaust after 17.5 years and one side of the V6 exhaust header bolts came out OK after buying a big 6 point 15mm 1/2 in drive socket, but bolt number three is jamming tighter as I move it pushing with all my might with my leg! It's been soaked in liquid wrench, that's not it.

Maybe no fix story on this one, just scrapyard for auto trans and maybe the truck keeps on for a while.

I bought it new and had a pretty good 17.5 year run with two cylinder head failures and no other failures. One cyl head failure was just the source was bad -- it was infant mortality for the rebuilt head I bought.

I know how ya feel. bought my ranger 2 years ago for $725. As of now i've put $2500 into it, and its a 14 year old NYS Truck (rustttt)...It now has a slow front main leak. once i get the money, i'm buying a new one. After a certain amount of time Its just time to get rid of er!!
