I really like my local shop. I try to buy all of my parts from them and have had labor done in the past that was very reasonably priced. Great quality work. But I am looking to regear and got a price quote of 1800-2000 if I pull the axles and bring them to him. That is with pretty good prices on all of the parts. The gears and install kits are cheaper than summit. The labor is around $1200. I was going in thinking ~600 parts and about 200 per axle. so about a grand total.

So if I am right and this price is out of control, anyone know a good shop in Central California? Preferably between San Jose and Monterey. I would like to get this done before my next offroad trip in two weeks.

 

10 bucks..bought my friend lunch..its not that hard..they have pages on pages of pics and how to install and stuff

 

If he's asking if that is a good price, then I would say he doesn't have any experience in this. DON"T do it yourself. pay the shop. It's not worth the headache if you don't set up the gears correctly, you could wind up doing it all over again...

Run away. That price is INSANE.
I've gotten quotes from many reputable shops for $1200-1300 parts and labor. That's driving the truck in, driving it out. They told me the cost would be less if I brought the front diff in myself.
I ended up just having the rear re-geared, and bought a used front differential (already re-geared) and installed it myself. Saved a bit of money that way, plus I'll sell my old differential to help make up the cost

 

I paid $300 to have my **** installed by a shop.

 

I got several estimates for $300-400 when I was looking to do it.

prerunner, you paid 300 in Anaheim? was that labor for one axle?
07rangersport, I have no doubt that I could set them up correctly, I can look at marking compound and redo until it looks good, unfortunately, all I have is a driveway and a basic socket set.

Labor rates around here are about 120 an hour, thus I almost never have anyone else work on my truck. This same shop told me $800 to install an RCD kit, but I did that by myself and just drove it to them and they welded the support braces for free.

I hit the phone book and found everyone was saying around $2000
So I guess I will go see how much some cheapo one time use tools from harbor freight will cost.

I wasn't trying to put you down or anything. My buddy did his on his own twice.... the third time he had a shop do it for him. Wound up costing him over 3k. Just didn't want that to happen to someone else..

 

Around $500 + parts here in KS.... I ended up putting in a new rear end with the gears I wanted.

 

i bought the parts and a shop was asking 250 for labor
i ended up paying a guy at work 100 and he was done it like an hour

I wasnt meaning to be defensive, I was only trying to say that I could do it but I dont have the place or tools right now. I love doing things myself, but I have a wheeling trip coming up and really need lower gears before then. I am thinking about buying all of the parts and posting on craigslist that I will pay $300 for someone to set them up.

Or maybe I will just wait for the torsen front to come out and worry about it then.

 

 

$80 for my future-uncle-in-law to do the rear in his shop and I bought Scott and Gumby's lunch & beer for the front.

 

Cool I found a place about 60 miles away that will do it for 1750. But that includes all parts and labor, one of the parts being a 31 spline detroit!
And I found one about 80 miles away that will do just gears for 800. All prices are me bringing in my axles. So looks like I am getting 4.88s disc brakes and a detroit next week!

Thanks for confirming my suspicions that the first shop was basically telling me to bend over!

 

but do you have a 31 spline axle?
im pretty sure most rangers are 28 spline other than FX4's and ones that have been swapped

 

somewhat correct, yes. All Rangers have the 28 spline 8.8 UNLESS it is an '02 FX4 or a '03-'07 FX4 Level II.
