1350 and 1354 manual tcase question
what is the difference in the two? i hear that with the 1350 that the front drive shaft has to be shortened. im getting a superlift soon and don't really want to do that since ill be lifting it. and Sonic04Edge has a 1350 manual tcase for sale and im wanting to get rid of the electric transfer case.

I believe the internals are weaker that's why you only find them behind the 2.9. I don't know if they were used on any 4 cylinder or old 3.0 engines but I know that the 4.0 always used the 54 case.

BW1350 & BW1354
The 1350 and 1354 are both 3-piece aluminum part time transfer cases. They both transfer power from the transmission to the rear axle and when actuated, also the front drive axle. The unit is lubricated by a positive displacement oil pump that channels oil flow through drilled holes in the rear output shaft. The pump turns with the rear output shaft and allows towing of the vehicle at maximum legal road speeds for extended distances without disconnecting the front and or rear driveshaft. The 1350 has a splined front receiver where the front driveshaft slides in. The 1354 has a yoke on the front that accepts a u-joint and holds it in place with straps. The 1350 and 1354 are produced as a mechanical shift and electronic shift.

If you wind up with either a 1350 or 1354 without the CV style (Tulip) front output flange you'll need a driveshaft from a 95-97 Explorer in order for the lengths to be correct. The nice thing about that driveshaft is that it's a double cardan design, so you don't have to get the Superlift shaft.
I run a 1354 Manual with the u-joint style front output shaft from a 94 Explorer 4.0. I used the driveshaft from the 95-97 Explorer like I said. Everything is working perfectly and help up to the abuse of the Sand Dunes.

I'm running a borg 1350 out of an 86 bronco II that i got for FREE!
Had to get the driveshaft shortened about 1.5 inches.
Internally they are very similar, 1350s are a 4 chain drive, while the 1354 is a 6 chain.
The 1354 is a stronger case, so thats the best to go with, but I figure the 1350 is a cheap replacement, ranges 50-100 for a replacement, where a 1354 is around 250
